What is FDIC?

In short

The FDIC is the US deposit insurer, and a certificate number identifies each bank it covers.

The FDIC is the United States deposit insurer. It holds customer deposits in banks it supervises, so a deposit is protected up to the insured limit rather than sitting entirely at the bank. Each covered bank carries its own certificate number, which is how you confirm the right institution is listed. The figures here are certificate numbers, not ratings: Bank of Guam shows FDIC cert 20884, Bank of America FDIC cert 25178, Banco Santander FDIC cert 29950, Axos Bank FDIC cert 35546 and American Express Business Cards FDIC cert 27471.
